SENSEX FALLS 302 POINTS ON GREECE DEFICIT SHOCK

Market fell nearly 2% on the first session of week on renewed fears of Greece default as its government stated it would miss deficit targets for 2011 and 2012.

Sensex shed 302.31 points, to close at 16,151.45. The Nifty closed at 4,849, down 93 points.

Traditionally, October has been a bad month for equities. Today’s steep fall has raised fears that this October will be no different.

It is a dismal start to October and the week as well. The market saw some deep cuts triggered by negative global cues. India, infact, was a picture of resilience compared to its Asian and European peers.

Market Updates :

BPCL leads gainers in 'A' group

HPCL, Educomp Solutions, Jaiprakash Power Ventures and GlaxoSmithKlineConsumer Healthcare are among the other gainers.

State-run oil marketing company BPCL jumped 5.29% to Rs 681.10. The stock topped the gainers in the BSE's 'A' group. Another state-run oil marketing company HPCL galloped 3.60% to Rs 378.55. The stock was second biggest gainer in 'A' group.

Public sector oil marketing companies (PSU OMCs) on Friday, 30 September 2011, hiked jet fuel, or ATF price by 1.5% to pass on the impact of a depreciating rupee, which has resulted in higher import cost. The three fuel retailers--BPCL, HPCL and Indian Oil Corporation--revise jet fuel prices on the 1st and 16th of every month, based on the average international price in the preceding fortnight.

Meanwhile, lower crude oil prices could reduce under-recoveries of PSU OMCs on domestic sale of diesel, LPG and kerosene at controlled prices. The government has already freed pricing of petrol. However, weak rupee will negate the impact of lower crudeoil prices for PSU OMCs as the crude oil that that refineries process is either imported or priced on import-parity.

Crude for November delivery was down 56 cents a barrel, or 0.71% at $78.64 a barrel in Asian trade on Monday, 3 October 2011. On Friday, 30 September 2011, crude futures for November delivery fell $2.94 to $79.20 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Education solutions provider Educomp Solutions climbed 3.10% to Rs 245.80. The stock was third biggest gainer in 'A' group.

Power generation firm Jaiprakash Power Ventures rose 2.79% to Rs 35.05. The stock was fourth biggest gainer in 'A' group.

GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, known for its malted food drinks brand Horlicks, rose 2.78% to Rs 2394. The stock was fifth biggest gainer in 'A' group.
