ICICI Bank, Pantaloon Retail (India), Steel Authority of India (SAIL) and SterliteIndustries (India) are among the other gainers.

Aluminium maker Hindalco Industries galloped 6.97% to Rs 131.20. The stock topped the gainers in the BSE's 'A' group. Metal and mining shares were in demand in today's trade as LMEX, a gauge of six metals traded on the London Metal Exchange, surged 5% to settle at $3,436.90 on 30 November 2011.

Private sector bank ICICI Bank jumped 6.76% to Rs 762.45. The stock was second biggest gainer in 'A' group.

Organised retailer Pantaloon Retail (India) climbed 6.38% to Rs 208.40. The stock was third biggest gainer in 'A' group. Ruling out any rollback of the policy to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail in the country, the government today, 1 December 2011, said it would issue the guidelines in due course.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday, 24 November 2011, cleared a proposal to allow 51% FDI in multi-brand retail and increase in FDI in single brand retail to 100% from current 51%, paving way for global chains like WalMart, Carrefour and Tesco to open mega stores in Indian cities.

However, the government's decision to permit FDI in multi-brand retail has createdpolitical turmoil, disrupting functioning of Parliament and leading to traders' protests.

State-run Steel Authority of India (SAIL) rose 6.20% to Rs 85.60. The stock was fourth biggest gainer in 'A' group.

Copper maker Sterlite Industries (India) rose 6.19% to Rs 105.45. The stock was fifth biggest gainer in 'A' group.

The BSE Mid-Cap index rose 0.9% and the BSE Small-Cap index gained 0.38%. Both these indices underperformed the Sensex.

BSE clocked turnover of Rs 1953 crore slightly higher than Rs 1942.16 crore on Wednesday, 30 November 2011.
