SHREE GANESHAY NAMAAH !
Choppy Sensex ends 74 pts up; Midcap, Smallcap rise 1-1.7%
The BSE Sensex stayed higher for major part of the first session of April, adding more than 70 points amid choppy trade. It gained as much as 126 points intraday, but the fall in European markets post PMI data erased some gains. Even the Nifty managed to hold the 5300 level quite nicely, supported by banks, capital goods, power stocks, and TCS.
Gold jewellery and watches maker Titan Industries climbed 6.17% to Rs 242.70 on reports the government has allowed the company to import gold directly for domestic sales. The stock topped the gainers in the BSE's 'A' group.
Reports suggested that directly importing gold will enable Titan to avoid nominal charges to bankers or state-run agencies for processing gold, but the bigger benefit is likely to be the easier import procedure. The Union Budget 2012-13 announced a hike in duty on gold imports from 2% to 4%.
Diversified Godrej Industries jumped 6.09% to Rs 274.30. The stock was second biggest gainer in 'A' group. Godrej Industries announced during trading hours on Friday, 30 March 2012, that its board has approved capital expenditure of about Rs 265 crore, plus applicable costs including stamp duty, registration charges and other charges towards acquiring a corporate office at Godrej One, Vikhroli. Godrej One is the first phase of the joint development project 'The Trees' between the company and Godrej Properties, a subsidiary of the company.
Footwear maker Bata India galloped 5.25% to Rs 809.55. The stock was third biggest gainer in 'A' group. The stock hit a record high of Rs 815.70 in intraday trade today, 2 April 2012.
Power projects financier Power Finance Corporation rose 5.24% to Rs 193.65. The stock was fourth biggest gainer in 'A' group.
Shares of power sector lenders, Power Finance Corporation (PFC) and Rural Electrification Corporation (REC), edged higher on reports the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) has announced a 37% hike in the power tariff.
According to reports, the TNEB announced a 37% hike in the power tariff, covering both domestic and industry sectors, a move that will fetch an additional Rs 7874 crore and bail out the state electricity board, which is in the red.
Power Finance Corporation and Rural Electrification Corporation provide financial assistance to state electricity boards, state government departments and rural electric cooperatives for rural electrification projects. According to recent reports, TNEB had accumulated losses of Rs 40700 crore as of March 2011, due to several years of no tariff increase.
Another Power projects financier Rural Electrification Corporation rose 5.21% to Rs 216.25. The stock was fifth biggest gainer in 'A' group.
