GDP, rupee, inflation, petrol: Is Nifty in for a knockout?
Jaipal Reddy hints at no rollback in petrol prices
Finally, a flat close after a very trying week for Indian equities. The barometer of the economy - stock markets, managed a pullback largely on account of the rupee recovering and global strength.
The Sensex fell 4.48 points, to close at 16,217.82 while the Nifty touched an intraday low of 4,889.35, before managing to close above the 4,900 level. The broader markets outperformed the BSE and NSE benchmarks, rising 0.5%.
Even as public protest against Wednesday's steep hike in petrol gathered momentum, Oil Minister Jaipal Reddy gave no indication of a rollback in the immediate future.

Voltas leads gainers in 'A' group
Adani Enterprises, Jubilant FoodWorks, Indiabulls Real Estate and Cummins India are among the other gainers.
Engineering company Voltas surged 11.98% to Rs 101.45 after consolidated net profit rose 2.7% to Rs 103.81 crore on 5.8% decline in net sales to Rs 1573.46 crore in Q4 March 2012 over Q4 March 2011. The result was announced after trading hours on Thursday, 24 May 2012. The stock topped the gainers in the BSE's 'A' group.
Commodity trading company Adani Enterprises spurted 6.97% to Rs 259.35. The stock was second biggest gainer in 'A' group. During market hours on Wednesday, 23 May 2012, Adani Enterprises in a clarification to a media report of Sebi inquiry on HSBC Bankregarding HSBC's alleged role in Adani Group companies' stock price manipulation, said that the promoters of Adani group have not pledged any shares with HSBC or any of its subsidiaries. Further, the company or its promoters did not have any financial arrangement/transaction, direct or indirect, with HSBC on this, Adani Enterprises said.
Fast food chain operator Jubilant FoodWorks climbed 5.89% to Rs 1240.75. The stock was third biggest gainer in 'A' group.
Indiabulls Real Estate rose 4.01% to Rs 53.20. The stock was fourth biggest gainer in 'A' group.
Diesel engines maker Cummins India rose 3.98% to Rs 427.30. The stock was fifth biggest gainer in 'A' group.

Volumes jump at Container Corporation of India counter
Wheels India, Core Education & Technologies, DCW and Shree Ganesh JewelleryHouse are among the other stocks to see a surge in volumes on BSE today, 25 May 2012.
Container Corporation of India clocked volume of 1.26 lakh shares by 13:11 IST on BSE, a 201.67-times surge over two-week average daily volume of 1,000 shares. The stock fell 0.38% to Rs 842.
Wheels India notched up volume of 79,000 shares, a 38.36-fold rise over two-week average daily volume of 2,000 shares. The stock jumped 16.34% to Rs 651.35.
Core Education & Technologies clocked volume of 5.83 lakh shares, a 16.45-fold rise over two-week average daily volume of 35,000 shares. The stock lost 0.83% to Rs 291.
DCW clocked volume of 38.98 lakh shares, a 15.21-fold surge over two-week average daily volume of 2.56 lakh shares. The stock jumped 6.41% to Rs 16.93.
Shree Ganesh Jewellery House clocked volume of 11.37 lakh shares, a 15.09-fold rise over two-week average daily volume of 75,000 shares. The stock surged 8.76% to Rs 93.10.
