News of the day:

Key benchmark indices registered small losses after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) surprised markets by raising its main lending rate viz. the repo rate by 25 basis points to 8% after Third Quarter Review of Monetary Policy for 2013-14 and said that it is only by bringing down inflation to a low and stable level that monetary policy can contribute to reviving consumption and investment in a sustainable way. Market men were expecting the RBI to leave rates unchanged after inflation—measured by both wholesale and retail prices—showed signs of easing last month, helped by lower food prices. The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, hit six-week closing low. The 50-unit CNX Nifty registered its lowest closing level in more than 8-1/2 weeks. The Sensex lost 23.94 points or 0.12%, up close to 130 points from the day's low and off about 110 points from the day's high. The market was volatile as the Sensex alternately swung between positive and negative zone during the day. The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was negative.
