Dipan Mehta, Member, BSE and NSE is optimistic that the market is likely to trend higher by April-March. "I think maybe two-three months down the line you should see a crossover from below to above the 200 day moving average and if it sustains over there then that is one signal,"
D-Street rollercoaster: EU summit, politics play killjoy
The market see-sawed its way to a 3% fall this week, riding on global cues and the political logjam in the country. It was truncated week, but Indian equities managed to hold steady till news of FDI in retail being put on hold halted its gains. Adding to the frenzy was the uncertainty about the outcome of the key EU summit.
The Nifty broke past key psychological levels this week, to end at 4866.70, down over 180 points. The Sensex lost 633 points to close at 16213.46.

Market Updates :
Opto Circuits (India) leads gainers in 'A' group
HPCL, Petronet LNG, Aditya Birla Nuvo and Indian Oil Corporation are among the other gainers
Opto Circuits (India) surged 5.42% to Rs 205.15 and topped the gainers in the BSE's 'A' group. The stock rose on bargain hunting after falling 4.49% in prior two trading sessions.
HPCL advanced 2.21% to Rs 293.65 and was second biggest gainer in 'A' group and Indian Oil Corporation rose 1.43% to Rs 270.10 and was fifth biggest gainer in 'A' group. The state-run oil marketing companies rose after crude oil price fell more than 2% to settle at $98.34 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange on Thursday, 8 December 2011. Lower crude oil prices will reduce under-recoveries of state-run oil marketing companies (PSU OMCs) on domestic sale of diesel, LPG and kerosene at controlled prices. However, a weak rupee will offset the benefit of lower oil prices as the crude oil that refineries process is either imported or priced on import-parity. Crude oil for January 2012 delivery settled at $98.34 a barrel, down $2.15 a barrel, or 2.14% on the New York Mercantile Exchange on Thursday, 8 December 2011.
Petronet LNG gained 1.57% to Rs 158.90 and was third biggest gainer in 'A' group. Recent reports indicated the company will soon finalise an agreement for sourcing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia under a pact with energy giant Gazprom. In June 2011, Gazprom had signed a preliminary deal with Petronet for the supply of 2.5 million tonne of LNG annually.
Aditya Birla Nuvo rose 1.56% to Rs 915.50, halting four day 1.17% fall. It was fourth biggest gainer in 'A' group. Reportedly Jaya Shree Textiles, part of the Aditya Birla Nuvo Group, which markets the brand “Linen Club”, has hiked the price of its fabrics by 4-5% since the beginning of December 2011. Poor crop in Europe from where it sources flax for linen and rupee fluctuations were cited as key reasons for the hike.
THE WEEK THAT WAS
Market tumbles on government's inability to implement policy reforms
The market tumbled last week on concerns over government's inability to continue with policy reforms after it suspended plans to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail sector. Concerns over outcome of European Union summit also spookedsentiments. Key benchmark indices declined for three out of four trading sessions. Equity market was shut on Tuesday, 6 December 2011, on account of Moharum.
The BSE Sensex fell 633.37 points or 3.76% to 16,213.46 in the week ended Friday, 9 December 2011. The 50-share S&P CNX Nifty fell 183.45 points or 3.63% to 4,866.70.
The BSE Mid-Cap index fell 2.47% while the BSE Small-Cap index fell 2.21%. Both these indices outperformed the Sensex.
Facing a harsh political reaction that paralysed the Indian Parliament, the governing Congress Party on Wednesday, 7 December 2011, suspended plans to allow foreign multibrand retailers like Wal-Mart to open stores in India.
The decision was a setback for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and seemed certain to deepen criticism that his administration had become increasingly adrift and ineffective. Earlier, the Union Cabinet had approved 51% FDI in multi-brand retail and raised the cap to FDI in single brand retail to 100% from the 51% earlier.
Meanwhile, the Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Thursday, 8 December 2011, allowed Janata Party leader and complainant Subramanian Swamy to lead evidence against home minister P Chidambaram to prove his alleged complicity in the 2G spectrum allocation scam.
