Sensex ends 478 pts down, its biggest 1-day fall since Sept

Bears make a comeback

It was a bad start to the week on Monday - the market saw biggest one-day fall since September 2011 led by huge shorts build up and unwinding of long positions. UP election results expected on March 6 and spike in crude oil prices to 10-month high may have deteriorated investors' sentiment. The fall was not only restricted to largecaps but also to broader markets, which tanked more than 3%.

Indian equities underperformed global peers today. The Sensex fell 477.82 points or 2.67%, to close at 17,445.75 led by selling in 28 stocks.

Volume Spurts :

Nirlon clocked volume of 21.75 lakh shares on BSE, a 76.4-times surge over two-week average daily volume of 28,000 shares. The stock jumped 09.75% to Rs 36.60 !

Onelife Capital Advisors notched up volume of 2.90 lakh shares, a 3.85-fold rise over two-week average daily volume of 55,000 shares. The stock tumbles down 01.14% at 312.20 !

Oracle Financial Services Software clocked volume of 2.16 lakh shares, a 3.71-fold rise over two-week average daily volume of 45,000 shares. The stock lost 1.58% to Rs 2542.30 !

Sterlite Industries (India) clocked volume of 75.19 lakh shares, a 2.33 fold surge over two-week average daily volume of 26.02 lakh shares. The stock lost 2.53% to Rs 115.65 after Vedanta Resources Plc group on Saturday, 25 February 2012, announced the merger of its Indian subsidiaries, Sesa Goa and Sterlite Industries and the proposed consolidation and simplification of the group structure. Sterlite will be merged with Sesa Goa and new entity will be named Sesa Sterlite. Three Sesa Goa shares will be issued for every 5 existingSterlite Industries shares !

ITC clocked volume of 16.21 lakh shares, a 1.8-fold rise over two-week average dailyvolume of 6.50 lakh shares. The stock rose 1.36% to Rs 212.30 !
