Sensex ends below 20K; HDIL, IVRCL melt amid midcap carnage
Investors dumped shares of mid and small cap companies amid a sell-off that intensified in realty firm HDIL. Dealers attributed the panic to a mix of negative news and disappointing quarterly numbers, causing investors to question the rich valuations most stocks are enjoying.

Small-cap, mid-cap stocks mauled
Among small-cap stocks, Shiv-Vani Oil & Gas, IVRCL, Prakash Steelage, Granules India, Hanung Toys, Sequent Scientific, Orbit Corp and Zylog Systems dropped 10% to 20%.
The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was weak. On BSE, 2,121 shares fell and 720 shares rose. A total of 116 shares were unchanged.
Among the 30-share Sensex pack, 21 declined while the rest of them rose.
Stock With Volumes :
Volumes jump at eClerx Services counter, Tube Investments of India, Ajanta Pharma, Housing Development & Infrastructure, and Tata Chemicals are among the other stocks to see a surge in volumes on BSE today, 24 January 2013.
eClerx Services notched up volume of 1.09 lakh shares by 13:11 IST on BSE, a 47.83-fold surge over two-week average daily volume of 2,000 shares. The stock lost 0.98% at Rs 660.
Tube Investments of India saw volume of 3.02 lakh shares, a 9.26-fold surge over two-week average daily volume of 33,000 shares. The stock lost 0.23% to Rs 193.80.
Ajanta Pharma clocked volume of 4.51 lakh shares, a 6.01-fold surge over two-week average daily volume of 75,000 shares. The stock surged 7.61% to Rs 528 with the stock extending Wednesday's 20% rally triggered by the company reporting strong Q3 earnings.
Housing Development & Infrastructure (HDIL) clocked volume of 2.35 crore shares, a 4.96-times surge over two-week average daily volume of 47.40 lakh shares. The stock tumbled 15.79% to Rs 81.05.
Tata Chemicals saw volume of 2.27 lakh shares, a 4.41-fold rise over two-week average daily volume of 52,000 shares. The stock lost 2.97% to Rs 358.05.
